If you’re just starting to learn about CBD, Hemp Oil, Medical Marijuana and all of the amazing reasons that these items can help transform and improve our lives, then congratulations!  You’re on the right path.

Unfortunately, that path can often be confusing and difficult to follow.  There are scientific studies, medical journals, and a ton of websites offering up information, some valuable and some not so much.

All of the information available on CBD, CBD Oils, Hemp and Hemp Oils is riddled with terminology that may seem foreign to some new to the field.  It’s actually pretty confusing to many who have spent quite some time researching it as well.

The fact is, there is a lot of information out there on CBD and Hemp Oils and other products, and our collective knowledge base is still fairly new.

In an attempt to help you understand as much as possible, we’ve put together a glossary of terms you may encounter on this website and others as you attempt to learn more about CBD and Hemp Oil.

CBD Hemp Glossary

 

Cannabidiol: One of the most prevalent Cannabinoids found in both Marijuana and Hemp plants.

Cannabinoid: Chemical compounds including phytocannabinoids and endocannabinoids.  

Cannibinoid Receptors: Receptors receive messages.  Cannabinoid Receptors receive the incoming messages from Cannabinoids, translating them to how they effect the body and mind.  There are 2 Cannabinoid Receptors, CB1 and CB2.

Cannnabis: A genus of flowering plant, containing the species Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Ruderalis.

Cannabis Sativa: A strain of the Cannabis plant, typically high in THC.

Cannabis Indica:  A strain of the Cannabis plant, typically high in THC.

Cannabis Ruderalis: A strain of the Cannabis plant, typically low in THC.  It is debated whether Cannabis Ruderalis is its own species, or a subset of Cannabis Sativa.  Either way, Cannabis Ruderalis contains the plant commonly known as hemp.

CB1 Receptors: A Cannabinoid Receptor found throughout the body, focused on regulating and influencing the effect of Cannabinoids on brain regions controlling functions such as memory, emotions and pain.

CB2 Receptors: A Cannabinoid Receptor found in the peripheral nervous system.  CB2 Receptors are especially concentrated in immune cells regulating inflammation.

CBD:  Short for Cannabidiol, one of the most prevalent Cannabinoids found in both Marijuana and Hemp plants.

CBD Oil: An oil containing Cannabidiol.

Charlotte’s Web: A cultivar from the Marijuana plant with less than 0.3% THC, named for a young epileptic patient named Charlotte. It has gained popularity as an option for treating seizures as well as a range of other medical conditions, and for bringing national attention to the possibilities of using low-THC Marijuana as treatment for a variety of illnesses.

Cultivar: A plant variety that has been produced in cultivation by selective breeding.

Endocannabinoid: Molecules found in mammals which activate cannabinoid receptors, Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids found naturally in mammals.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS): Found in all mammals, the ECS is a regulatory system configured to accept cannabinoids, regulating all bodily processes.

Entourage Effect: A proposed idea that biologically active compounds can be more efficient when administered in combination with other inactive compounds. A combination of cannabinoids can have a different effect than single cannabinoids acting alone.

Hemp: A variety of Cannabis Sativa, or possibly a separate species, Cannabis Ruderalis.  Hemp contains very small amounts of THC.  One of the oldest known domesticated crops, Hemp has traditionally been used for its fiber, producing products such as rope, paper, oil, fuel and clothing. Hemp has been classified since 1970 with Marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, making it illegal to grow in the United States.  

Hemp Seed Oil: The oil created from the seeds of the hemp plant, it does not contain Cannabinoids.

Hydroxy (or Hydroxyl) Groups: A functional group that attaches to some molecules containing an oxygen and hydrogen atom, bonded together.

Industrial Hemp: Another name for the Hemp Plant.

Marijuana: A psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant intended for medical or recreational use.  Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica plants, containing high amounts of THC.

Nanotechnology: Science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers.

Nano Enhanced: Forming an extract to produce particles smaller than 100 nanometers.

Phytocannabinoid: Cannabinoids that occur naturally in the cannabis plant, including THC and CBD.  To date, there are at least 113 known Phytocannabinoids.

Phytocannabinoid Diols: Chemical compounds containing two hydroxy groups originating from the industrial hemp plant. 

Terpenes: Found in plants, terpenes are chemical compounds producing odor and flavor.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): THC is one of many phytocannabinoids found in Cannabis plants.  THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.  

Tincture: An extract of a plant, often using ethanol as the solvent, creating a solution which can be administered orally in liquid form.
